5:30 AM ??!!

Today marks the third day of hopefully many.  I have begun an effort to get up earlier every day.  I am by nature a night owl and I would like to change that.  I find that I am not fully awake until about an hour into my workday each day.  Then at the end of the day I too often find myself just lazily lying down on my couch, not doing anything remotely productive and just surfing the internet on sites like Reddit.  It's an informative version of entertainment but it ultimately doesn't turn into anything more than trivia knowledge.  I want to take advantage of Ben Franklin's quote, "Early to bed and early rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise".

I have some sort of need to always be making a list of things to do.  My list currently has 30 things on it.  I think the problem is that I don't get enough turnover on the list.  As soon as I complete a task it comes off of course.  And every so often I'll add items on to the list.  A few items are pressing, but most of the time there isn't a specific due date on them.  Many things will linger for quite a while.  I'm hoping that an earlier start to my day will give me motivation and energy to get more things done.

I get up around 6:45 each day now.  I'll sit on the couch until about 7:15, and then get ready for work until about 7:50.  Then I will drive to work and get there at around 8:15 to 8:25ish.  I won't go to bed until about 12 or so, sometimes later.  I don't think I get anything productive done any time after 9.

I want to get to where I consistently get up at 5:30, get ready for either a swim or run or bike to work and perform those tasks until about 7:00 or so, then get cleaned up for work and drive there if not already there by bike until about 8.  I would then work until 4:30, commute or ride home, then go to bed around 10:30, maybe 11:00 if I stretch it.

I started on Wednesday.  I got up at 5:30, turned off my cell phone / alarm clock, promptly reset it for 7:00, and went back to bed.  So that wasn't a good start.

I tried again yesterday (Thursday).  This time I had an early morning presentation I had to give at work starting at 8:20, meaning I had to actually be at work by 8:10.  So I had to stay up this time.  I had three different alarm times set in case I sleepily reset one of them.  I woke up at 5:30 and actually stayed up.  However, I didn't do anything but waste some more time on the internet.  When I got home for the evening, it didn't take long before I took a two hour nap.  I don't usually take naps unless I am especially tired.

Today was much better.  I got up promptly at 5:30 and felt like I had so much energy.  The most energy I think I've had in three weeks.  I went to my normal YMCA to swim.  It was supposedly an open lap swim time like every morning until 8 or 9 depending on the day.  Every lane was full of at least two or three people and they were almost all going really fast.  I think it was some kind of informal master's group.  I didn't want to mess around with that.  I just made a mental (and now written) note that Friday mornings aren't a good time to swim at the usual Y.  I still had time and desire left to swim so I drove over to another Y that is a little out of my way.  I didn't like the locker rooms as much, or the pool as much because it was too shallow, but I did get in an awesome swim.  I am currently still awake as of 6PM, so I think this qualifies as a good wake-up day.
